General Description

The Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute ranks 2nd within research centers in Latin America and holds the 109th position in the world. The National Laboratory of Nano and Biomaterials (LANNBIO) conducts research on the synthesis of nanomaterials with antimicrobial activity to prevent the deteriorating action of microbial films on historic calcareous stone buildings, also in studying the chemistry and characterisation of several archaeological materials.

 

Role and Profile of key people

PhD Patricia Quintana (F): Researcher at Cinvestav-Mérida, developing nanomaterials with antimicrobial activity to prevent the deteriorating action of microbial films on historic calcareous stone buildings. Also studies the chemistry and characterisation of several archaeological materials employed in Maya culture such as: stucco, pigments, posthumous bundling and resting supports, to contribute to increase the knowledge about the living conditions of pre-Hispanic Maya societies.

 

Key Research Facilities, Infrastructure and Equipment

In Cinvestav we have the National Laboratory of Nano and Biomaterials (LANNBIO) which has several techniques to characterize different materials, such as: microscopies (SEM, Láser Confocal), spectroscopies (RMN, FTIR, RAMAN, UV-Vis), thermoanalysis (TGA, DSC, DMA), structural analysis (DRX, SAXS) also has XPS, Rheometer and BET. These research facilities are wholly independent from other Beneficiaries and/or TC Partner organisations in the consortium.

Current involvement in Research and Innovation actions

The proposed project add-on values on cultural heritage research specifically on the identification of ancient techniques, salt weathering, climate change, in order to promote sustainable conservation practice in built heritage in tropical weather and to generate nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties to prevent biodeterioration on stone materials, to study the stability of nanomaterials against environmental factors and response of lithic microorganisms to climate change.
